Vaastu is the science of direction that combines all the five elements of nature- Space (Akaash), Air (Vaayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal), Earth (Prithvi) and balances them with the man and the material.
Vaastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science containing principles and practices for constructing buildings in such a way which ensures a harmonious balance between man, nature and various kinds of forces and energies. This harmonious balance brings happiness, health, wealth and prosperity.
According to Vaastu Shastra, when buildings are in harmony with the underlying cosmic principles, they become a part of the basic structure of the universe and pulsate in harmony with it. These positive vibrations are believed to own a positive effect on the inhabitants.
Vaastu has an important role in modern architecture. The primary aim of modern architecture is to make sure that the structure is functionally effective as well as provides physical comfort to its inhabitants. Vaastu, on the other hand strives to make sure that the inhabitants of the building enjoy prosperity, happiness and good health.
Vaastu Shastra takes advantage of the natural resources like sun, wind, topography of the site and surroundings to channelize positive energy and prevent imbalance in the building and thus bring harmony between man, nature and his built environment.
Vaastu Shastra lays down principles on all aspects of construction such as site selection, orientation and location of the building on the site, space to be left on all sides of the building, location of each room and direction of the main entrance door. So, while contemporary architecture focuses on physical happiness; Vaastu focuses both on physical as well as mental happiness of the inhabitants.

These days most of the time is spent on the details like structure, external elevations and appearance, but not much time is spent on the comfort level of the inhabitants of the building. Our ancestors spend the time on internal planning and then moved to external whereas in present environment, the maximum time is spent on external planning and then internal planning follows. Hence, it is necessary that these two are combined while designing or building any structure in order to get the fullest result to the inhabitants.
The principles of Vaastu Shastra extends from macro-level to the microlevel i.e., site selection, site planning and orientation, zoning and placement of rooms, proportional relationships between the various parts of buildings, architecture, civil engineering and landscaping. Vaastu forms the basics of each construction. One must follow Vaastu from the initial level i.e., from choosing a plot to shifting in the building. Therefore, Vaastu is not merely a word but it is a science and a bridge between man and nature.
